Kyokushinkai is a form of karate, founded by Masutatsu Oyama in 1957. "Kyoku" means extremely, "shin" means truth or reality, and the "kai" means meet or unite. The style is based on other forms of karate that Oyama trained, including Shotokan and Goju-Ryu, and much of kihon (basic techniques) and kata (patterns) derived from these.
